This qualification is regulated by Ofqual (The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation) and is listed on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications. Each qualification carries a unique Qualification Number, which appears on the learner’s final certificate. Every unit also includes its own Unit Reference Number, ensuring recognition and transparency across the UK education framework.

All ATHE qualifications are assessed through coursework and assignments — there are no written exams. 

Each unit you study will have specific Learning Outcomes (LOs) and Assessment Criteria (ACs) that you must meet to achieve a Pass, Merit, or Distinction. 

You’ll complete a range of tasks such as written reports, case studies, research projects, and presentations. Your work will be internally assessed by your tutor, based on the quality and depth of your understanding. 

ATHE provides a sample assignment for every unit, which your tutor may use or adapt. Each assignment includes extension activities that give you the opportunity to demonstrate higher-level skills and aim for Merit or Distinction grades. 

 

How Your Work Is Graded 

Grade Description 
Pass You meet all the Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria for the unit. 
Merit You meet all the Pass criteria and also achieve the additional Merit standards. 
Distinction You meet all the Pass, Merit, and Distinction standards for the unit. 
Fail You do not meet the minimum Pass standards for the unit. 

Once you complete all the required units, your total points are combined to give you an overall qualification grade of Pass, Merit, or Distinction.
If you don’t meet all requirements for the full qualification, you can still receive unit credits for any units you have passed. 

 

Key Points to Remember 

  • All work must meet the Pass standards before a Merit or Distinction can be awarded. 
  • You cannot skip Pass-level work and go straight for a higher grade. 
  • There are no exams — assessment is based entirely on coursework. 
  • Tutors may advise students to aim for a Pass first, depending on progress and understanding.

Top 10 Courses to Study in the UK in 2022

The ATHE Level 3 Diploma in Business and Management is designed for learners aged 16 and above who are ready to begin their higher education journey in business. 

To enrol, learners should have one of the following: 

  • Five GCSEs (Grade C/4 and above) or equivalent international qualifications 
  • A Level 2 qualification in a related subject 
  • Relevant work experience for mature learners 

Learners must also demonstrate an appropriate level of English language proficiency to successfully complete the course. 

For international students, one of the following English language qualifications (or approved equivalent) is required: 

  • IELTS UKVI – Minimum 4.5 in each component (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking)
  • Common European Framework (CEFR) – Level B2
  • Cambridge English Advanced (CAE) – Score of 162 or above
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic – Score between 42–49
