Introduction

BSMI is fully committed to following regulations set by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. This policy sets out the arrangements for first aid within the College to ensure that all students, staff, visitors, and contractors receive prompt, effective, and appropriate first aid treatment in the event of illness, injury, or emergency. It is the Director’s responsibility to produce, update and develop the policy and ensure that all the employees and contractors understand and comply with the BSMI health and safety requirements.

First Aid Policy BSMI takes the full responsibility for producing, implementing, managing and monitoring the first aid procedures for all the stakeholders This policy acts upon the risks identified in order to reduce them appointing competent persons to oversee health and safety procedures and guidelines within the college.

Roles and Responsibilities

The Director will:

· Ensure sufficient first aid resources, equipment, and trained personnel.

· Approve and annually review the first aid policy.

· Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation.

· Conduct first aid needs assessments annually or when significant changes occur.

· Maintain a register of qualified First Aiders and Appointed Persons.

· Ensure first aid kits and equipment are adequately stocked and inspected regularly.

· Coordinate first aid training and requalification.

First Aiders will:

· Provide immediate first aid support when required.

· Record all treatment in the Accident/First Aid Record.

· Ensure their certificate remains in date.

· Use protective equipment and follow infection control procedures.

Staff and students will:

· Report accidents, incidents, and hazards promptly.

· Follow college procedures in emergencies.

· Support first aiders as directed.

First Aid Provision

The College will ensure an adequate number of trained First Aiders are available during operational hours, in line with the first aid needs assessment.

First Aid Kits

· Located in the college in a clearly marked, accessible area.

· Checked quarterly by the Health & Safety Manager or delegated persons.

· Contents must meet regulatory requirements.

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)

· Nearest Defibrillator (AED) is located: Pavilion Theatre, Westover Road, Bournemouth, BH1 2BU.

· First Aiders will be trained in AED use.

Procedures In the Event of Injury or Illness

1. Contact the nearest First Aider or Reception to summon assistance.

2. A First Aider will assess the situation and administer appropriate care.

3. Emergency services will be contacted if required.

4. The injured or ill person will not be left unattended if their condition is serious.

Accident/Incident Reporting

· All first aid interventions must be recorded using the College’s Accident Book which is located with the first aid kit.

· Serious incidents must be reported to the Health & Safety Manager immediately.

· RIDDOR-reportable incidents (if applicable) will be handled by the Health & Safety Manager.

Calling Emergency Services

Emergency services must be called when:

· The injury is severe or life-threatening

· Loss of consciousness occurs

· Severe bleeding is present

· Spinal or suspected fractures are involved

· The First Aider deems it necessary

Administration of Medication

· First Aiders must not administer prescription medication.

· Over-the-counter medication may not be supplied unless part of a specific care plan (e.g., allergy or asthma plans).

Infection Control

First Aiders must follow hygiene procedures, including:

· Use of gloves and protective equipment

· Safe disposal of contaminated waste

· Cleaning of surfaces after incidents

Training

· First Aiders must hold current certificates from recognised training providers.

· Refresher training arranged every 3 years or earlier if required.

· Additional training provided for specialist needs (e.g., anaphylaxis, diabetes, epilepsy).

Communication of Policy

· The policy will be available on the College intranet and in key staff areas.

· Students will be informed during induction.

· Signage indicating First Aid locations will be posted across campus.

Monitoring and Review

· The policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if significant changes occur.

· Audit of accident records to identify trends and improve health and safety arrangements.
