Introduction<\/strong><\/p>\n

BSMI is fully committed to following regulations set by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981. This policy sets out the arrangements for first aid within the College to ensure that all students, staff, visitors, and contractors receive prompt, effective, and appropriate first aid treatment in the event of illness, injury, or emergency. It is the Director\u2019s responsibility to produce, update and develop the policy and ensure that all the employees and contractors understand and comply with the BSMI health and safety requirements.<\/p>\n

First Aid Policy BSMI takes the full responsibility for producing, implementing, managing and monitoring the first aid procedures for all the stakeholders This policy acts upon the risks identified in order to reduce them appointing competent persons to oversee health and safety procedures and guidelines within the college.<\/p>\n

Roles and Responsibilities<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Director will:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Ensure sufficient first aid resources, equipment, and trained personnel.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Approve and annually review the first aid policy.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Conduct first aid needs assessments annually or when significant changes occur.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Maintain a register of qualified First Aiders and Appointed Persons.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Ensure first aid kits and equipment are adequately stocked and inspected regularly.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Coordinate first aid training and requalification.<\/p>\n

First Aiders will:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Provide immediate first aid support when required.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Record all treatment in the Accident\/First Aid Record.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Ensure their certificate remains in date.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Use protective equipment and follow infection control procedures.<\/p>\n

Staff and students will:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Report accidents, incidents, and hazards promptly.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Follow college procedures in emergencies.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Support first aiders as directed.<\/p>\n

First Aid Provision<\/strong><\/p>\n

The College will ensure an adequate number of trained First Aiders are available during operational hours, in line with the first aid needs assessment.<\/p>\n

First Aid Kits<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 Located in the college in a clearly marked, accessible area.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Checked quarterly by the Health & Safety Manager or delegated persons.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Contents must meet regulatory requirements.<\/p>\n

Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 Nearest Defibrillator (AED) is located: Pavilion Theatre, Westover Road, Bournemouth, BH1 2BU.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 First Aiders will be trained in AED use.<\/p>\n

Procedures In the Event of Injury or Illness<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Contact the nearest First Aider or Reception to summon assistance.<\/p>\n

2. A First Aider will assess the situation and administer appropriate care.<\/p>\n

3. Emergency services will be contacted if required.<\/p>\n

4. The injured or ill person will not be left unattended if their condition is serious.<\/p>\n

Accident\/Incident Reporting<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 All first aid interventions must be recorded using the College\u2019s Accident Book which is located with the first aid kit.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Serious incidents must be reported to the Health & Safety Manager immediately.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 RIDDOR-reportable incidents (if applicable) will be handled by the Health & Safety Manager.<\/p>\n

Calling Emergency Services<\/strong><\/p>\n

Emergency services must be called when:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 The injury is severe or life-threatening<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Loss of consciousness occurs<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Severe bleeding is present<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Spinal or suspected fractures are involved<\/p>\n

\u00b7 The First Aider deems it necessary<\/p>\n

Administration of Medication<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 First Aiders must not administer prescription medication.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Over-the-counter medication may not be supplied unless part of a specific care plan (e.g., allergy or asthma plans).<\/p>\n

Infection Control<\/strong><\/p>\n

First Aiders must follow hygiene procedures, including:<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Use of gloves and protective equipment<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Safe disposal of contaminated waste<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Cleaning of surfaces after incidents<\/p>\n

Training<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 First Aiders must hold current certificates from recognised training providers.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Refresher training arranged every 3 years or earlier if required.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Additional training provided for specialist needs (e.g., anaphylaxis, diabetes, epilepsy).<\/p>\n

Communication of Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 The policy will be available on the College intranet and in key staff areas.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Students will be informed during induction.<\/p>\n

\u00b7 Signage indicating First Aid locations will be posted across campus.<\/p>\n

Monitoring and Review<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00b7 The policy will be reviewed annually or sooner if significant changes occur.<\/p>\n
