As with any innovative force when introduced to the status quo, with the advent of digital marketing the landscape of marketing as a whole would be fundamentally changed without a possibility of ever returning to its previous iteration. And whilst that disruption experienced within other industries might have completely eliminated traditional roles, digital marketing has opened new career options, such as email marketing and eCommerce managers, whilst leaving its traditional roles changed but intact.

So in what ways has the introduction of digital marketing as a viable methodology of marketing redefined careers within the industry as a whole? So, let’s take a moment to focus upon one aspect of this change, the shift of careers within marketing after digital marketing’s introduction.

    A Career Landscape Changed.

First and foremost, it is of note to take a look at digital marketing as a whole before exploring its individual facets. Within the last three years alone, the availability as well as demand for positions within digital marketing has steadily increased and shows no signs of slowing. Unlike traditional marketing, digital marketing is constantly evolving. In the process of this evolution, new roles within companies are constantly being generated.

What began with the mastery of social media as an outlet for increasing brand awareness, email marketing strategies, and tailored content creation has thus transformed into an industry that values innovative approaches not seen years ago. The rise of new platforms and a shift in consumer mindsets as a whole have allowed for a more varied yet expansive set of options available to those seeking a career within the industry. Positions such as eCommerce managers, social media marketing managers, and mobile marketers have sprung up as businesses began to adapt to the digital age. With that adaptation, marketing itself changed to accommodate the need for individuals to fill the gaps created in the jump from traditional roles.

With each passing year, those options continue to widen. Though, the introduction of a digital landscape has done more than simply change the availability of positions within the industry, it has also fundamentally changed the necessary skills to stay relevant within this new era.

An Expansion of Necessary Skill as to Stay Relevant.

Previously, it was merely enough for candidates seeking a position within the industry to have attained a degree with a focus on marketing as to begin their career with a chosen company.

Though, as marketing itself has shifted due to the disruption, the skill sets needed to begin a career as a digital marketer have evolved beyond that one time requirement. Now, it is imperative that individuals seeking to enter the industry not only understand core marketing principles but also possess a keen mind for data driven analytics whilst remaining creative in approach. This was unheard of before the advent of digital marketing but as of now is a critical aspect many employers wish to find within their candidates.

Thus the training necessary to enter the industry has had to shift to account for the expectations placed upon potential individuals within the industry. Skills such as being adept within data analysis, understanding the fluid nature of social media marketing, front end programming skills, and an understanding of leveraging content, whilst being unseen within traditional marketing, have become sought after within the digital era. To this end, programmes focused upon teaching the various skills needed to find success within digital marketing have cropped up to decrease the skill gap within the industry.

Knowing this, those seeking to enter the industry must be certain to develop the necessary skills that will present a competitive edge within an expanding landscape.

    Changed but for the Better.

As the nature of positions within marketing has fundamentally shifted with the introduction of the digital landscape, that change has brought with it positive ripples throughout the industry.

An abundance of career opportunities, possibilities for an expansion of potential candidate pool, and the prospect of the integration within tech-focused industries have created vast new roles to be filled by committed individuals searching for opportunities within an industry that shows no signs of slowing in the future.

That being the case, while the nature of positions available within digital marketing as well as marketing as a whole may have changed, that change is to the benefit of all those would like to build a successful career within the industry.
